Focus On the Skills You Need For the Job, Not The Product Knowledge
Aug 22, 2023
Something that IC candidates constantly need a reminder of...
Specifically for those presenting on the product that you’re interviewing for.
Don’t overthink it, focus on the nuts and bolts of a good presentation.
The majority of companies out there are confident in their Enablement teams.
This means they’re confident in their ability to train new hires on the space, the product, the why, the personas, how to demo, etc.
With that confidence, they’re not evaluating a candidate's product knowledge.
Of course, it’s a plus if you have it, but they’re looking for reps who already know how to do the job.
Think about it.
How long does it take to teach someone about a product vs how long did it take you to get really good at being an SDR/AE/CSM?
3 examples of what people should focus on but instead spend too much time with the product:
SDRs - Focus on setting a clear + friendly upfront contract at the beginning of the call
AEs - Focus on digging for pain + contributing to a conversation, it can’t be one-sided
CSMs - Focus on value-based, open-ended questions, not “have any questions”
Start with what makes you good at what you do -> product research -> case studies -> etc.
Be smart with where you spend your time preparing. Don't over think it.
