Explaining What You're Looking For In Your Next Boss

“Tell me about the best and worst bosses you’ve had in your career.”

Wow.

What a spicy interview question. Who wants 🫖?

While it’s important to recognize the bad, it’s equally as important not to trash them in an interview.

Instead, focus on how it made you realize why your other bosses were so good.

Even if you’ve never had a good boss, take what you didn’t like from your previous bosses and use the opposite to describe what you think the qualities of a good boss are (or qualities you’re looking for in your new boss).

Good examples Hiring Managers have heard:

“Something I’m looking for in my next boss is the ability to coach me to manage…”

“I need someone who is not afraid to tell me I’m going the wrong direction…”

“Communicating what was going on at the department level is something I valued…”

“Providing constructive feedback outside of performance reviews and practicing it…”

For interviewers, encouraging candidates to be more specific with their answers when this question is asked is powerful for both parties.

Put all cards on the table so everyone knows if it’s a win-win.
