Do The Job Before You Have It, Advice From An SVP of Sales

Kyle Norton is the SVP of Sales & Partnerships at Owner.

Candidates reach out to him cold to earn the right to be interviewed for the jobs Owner has open. Here is his tactical advice on how to approach this as a candidate (I'd recommend all levels use this):

"After I shared that I was hiring for XDRs last week, I got flooded with messages and outreach (120 DMs in 36 hours).

Most of it had… room for improvement, so I wanted to share some advice for all the job seekers out there.

Here’s how to standout:

Keep it short
- Any role with a lot of interest (see: the ones you actually want) means a hiring manager could be fielding tens or hundreds of messages so don’t make them read a novel.
- Keep your message short, punchy and focused.

Lead with your results
- That’s basically the only thing we care about with your outreach
- If you don’t mention p-club, quota crushing, I’ll assume you don't have it because if you did, you would mention it.

Tell me why this opportunity and why Owner
- “Show me you know me” S/O  Samantha McKenna
- That means you can’t spray and pray. Do the research.

Stand out
- Using great research: mentioning something on a pod I’ve done
OR
- Using novelty: someone made a custom gif about joining Owner with the Kawhi shot

PICK UP THE PHONE
- There’s no better way to stand out in today’s keyboard warrior XDR landscape than actually cold calling the hiring manager.
- If you execute well, this is basically an auto-pass to first round interview

Make it easy
- Always apply online so a hiring manager can easily flag you for follow-up
- Send an email so it can quickly be forwarded to a TA counterpart or other parties.

Hopefully that helps you land some more interviews.

What did I miss here?

p.s. Maybe this is just personal preference but please don't send me a voice memo. I can't scan it easily, I can't forward it or paste notes into our ATS and I just find them annoying. Just me?"
