Interview tip
Having recruited in fashion, staffing and now for Uber, Jessica has years of experience asking the right questions to make long term connections between companies -> candidates. She's seen growth at all stages, let's see what she asks in Sales interviews and what she looks for in answers.
2 questions she asks in interviews:
1. What types of roles are you interviewing for?
2. How does your Manager measure success?
What she looks for:
1. What types of roles are you interviewing for?
-> Do you want to be an IC forever or is this a stepping stone to management?
-> Where do you see yourself in the next two years?
-> If you say you know how to sell and you'll be an IC but want to be promoted in 6 months, that's a red flag for me because I'm looking for someone to do this role
-> I'm looking for people to be focused on the role they're interviewing for in the near term and then they talk about earned promotions in their future
-> They're excited to learn and grow in this role
2. How does your Manager measure success?
-> I'm not asking what your numbers and quota are, we'll get there
-> This helps me understand how they stack up
-> Don't overcompensate for bad performance, don't make excuses
-> There's a way to talk about the situation, blaming people isn't how you do it
-> Explain what you learned, how you've been improving and the path going forward
Advice
"People get caught up with company name or what looks shiny and exciting. I challenge them to think about what they're good at, passionate about and what their strengths are. Go for the job that reflects that, not the company name."
